Predictive analytics

Three questions to ask before investing in predictive analytics

Predictive work creates value only when it changes a decision. These questions help healthcare leaders test whether a model is ready for operational use.

What decision will change?

A model should have a named user and a specific decision. Forecasting census, readmissions, or denials can be valuable, but only if the result reaches someone who can respond in time.

What happens when the model is right?

Prediction without a response protocol creates interesting information, not operational value. Define the action, authority, and capacity required before the model is deployed.

How will performance be monitored?

Model accuracy changes as operations, payer behavior, and patient populations change. Monitoring should include technical performance and business impact.

  • Accuracy against an agreed baseline
  • Adoption by intended users
  • Time from prediction to action
  • Measured financial or operational outcome
